On the Heels of Unveiling $435M Fund, Emergence, the Enterprise VC Firm Behind Veeva, Box and Zoom, Announces 3 Promotions

Promotions include: Joe Floyd to General Partner, Jake Saper to Partner and Kara Egan to Principal--Move Follows Addition of Operators with Go-to-Market Expertise

SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Less than a year after it unveiled ECP V--a $435M fund more than 35 percent larger than its last raise in 2015--Emergence announced today several team promotions, signaling continued momentum for the leading venture capital firm behind Zoom, Box, and Veeva Systems (that brought Emergence a 300X return from its 2013 IPO).

Since its inception, Emergence’s collective investments have created more than $150B in cumulative market cap. Founded in 2003, the firm has intentionally remained small, focused on early-stage enterprise start-ups, and makes an average of only 5 - 7 investments per year--all to ensure strong, collaborative partnerships with its portfolio companies.

Emergence promoted Joe Floyd to General Partner, Jake Saper to Partner, and Kara Sweeney Egan to Principal, and brought on Carlotta Siniscalco as Senior Associate. The promotions build on the firm’s recent hires made to provide the go-to-market strategies startups are increasingly seeking from their partners:

  • Viviana Faga was named Operating Partner--Viv previously held senior marketing roles with Salesforce, Yammer and Microsoft;
  • Doug Landis as Growth Partner--Doug has been recognized for his sales and strategic contributions at Box, Salesforce, and Google; and
  • Tammy Han as Head of Talent--Tammy previously held talent roles at Sequoia, First Round, MemSQL and Riviera Partners (where she built core engineering teams for Pinterest, MoPub (acq by Twitter), Karma Science (acq by Facebook), AeroFS (acq by Redbooth), Uber and more).

"Our partnership with Emergence has been invaluable in helping us define our strategy, drive our growth and develop our market category,” said Kieran Snyder, CEO and co-founder of Textio. “The Emergence team is made up of operators, industry experts and prior founders; they are my first call when I'm thinking about product positioning in the enterprise. Since we’ve partnered with Emergence, our revenue has tripled year over year. Emergence's partnership has been critical to this growth."

“Emergence focuses on early-stage investments because we want to partner with startups from their nascent stages through exits and beyond,” said Kevin Spain, General Partner at Emergence. “We strive to be the most important partner by providing guidance at every step in a company’s growth. In the same light, we’re delighted to promote Joe, Jake, and Kara from within. They’ve each made significant contributions to our portfolio companies’ successes, and have demonstrated the partnership values that make Emergence unique."

Previously a Partner at Emergence, Joe Floyd’s expertise in building cloud companies has evolved over 10 years of advising and investing in startups. He’s led the firm's investment in project44 (now valued ~$500M) and has been actively involved in portfolio companies including SalesLoft, Mya and Total Expert. Prior to joining Emergence, Joe worked at American Capital's technology group, and prior to that was an Associate with McKinsey & Co.

Jake Saper, who was promoted from Principal, has played an integral role in helping the firm define and pursue its Coaching Networks thesis. As part of that work, he serves on the boards of Emergence portfolio companies Guru, Textio, and Drishti – all category-defining Coaching Network companies. Jake also co-led the firm’s investment in Comfy, a connected workplace platform, which was acquired by Siemens earlier this year. Jake previously worked at Kleiner Perkins' Green Growth Fund.

Kara Sweeney Egan, promoted from Senior Associate, has been instrumental in helping grow Emergence’s portfolio companies in the Deskless Workforce and Coaching Network arenas. She serves as a board observer at UpKeep, Top Hat, and Zinc. Prior to Emergence, she led product marketing at Stitch Labs, ran partner marketing for Zendesk’s enterprise product, and launched .406 Ventures’ first $170M fund as their first hire.

Carlotta Siniscalco, joining as Senior Associate, previously worked at Ribbit Capital, the fintech-focused fund behind Robinhood, Coinbase, and Affirm. Prior to Ribbit, Carlotta held roles at NerdWallet and Goldman Sachs.

Joe, Jake, and Kara all serve as Kauffman Fellows, members of a two-year educational, networking, and leadership development program for venture capitalists.
