Commissioner Malmström visits Canada to take stock of progress with EU-Canada trade agreement

Canada | Brussels, 26 September 2018

The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada celebrated its first anniversary on 21 September 2018. Today European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström arrives in Montreal in order to assess how the agreement is doing so far.

On the Wednesday 26 September, the Commissioner will meet with the Canadian Minister of International Trade Diversification, James Gordon Carr. Together, they will attend the first EU-Canada Joint Committee, which is the highest body for the two partners to discuss issues of interest related to the agreement.

Commissioner Malmström will then visit two businesses that are already making use of the trade agreement. The first is PBSC Urban Solutions, a Canadian company that provides bike-sharing systems for cities around the world. On Thursday 27 September, she will visit Piano Vertu, a Canadian importer of European pianos, such as those made by ‘Estonia Pianos’, one of our exporter stories highlighted last week.

After a public event on CETA and progressive trade at the Conseil des relations internationales de Montréal, the Trade Commissioner will give a speech at the Jean Monnet Centre for European studies at the University of Montréal, entitled: “Old Bonds, New Opportunities”.

Photos and videos from the visit, as well as the speech at the University of Montreal, will be available soon on the website of DG Trade
