SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Wisconsin Department of Trade, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) says they have identified a case of bird flu in a commercial poultry flock in Sheboygan County.

The DATCP says the farm and a 10-kilometer area around it has been quarantined to restrict the movement of any poultry products and that all birds on the property will not enter the food system. They are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to handle the outbreak.

According to the DATCP’s bird flu resources page, the number of poultry affected is around 40,000.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services and Sheboygan County Public Health are monitoring any exposed farm workers for symptoms of bird flu, but the DATCP says that risk to the general public is low.

Bird flu can be spread from bird to bird and to people through contact with an infected or wild bird, as well as contact with equipment or clothing used while working with animals. You can find exposure prevention information here.

If you are a farmer in Sheboygan County and are concerned that your poultry may be in the affected area, the DATCP has a mapping tool to show the active control areas and surveillance zones.
