GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — In 1987, the Ouray County Deputies responded to a call about human remains found off of Red Mountain Pass. Due to the body being exposed to the elements for a long time, and the lack of technology for further testing in the 80s, the case went cold for over three decades.

In 2019, investigators sent the remains to University of North Texas, where they entered the remains into the NamUs database and documented a DNA profile for this John Doe. This allowed investigators to compare this profile to any missing persons in the area. Now that they have ruled out any possible connections the remains could potentially have, and with the price of advanced DNA testing finally being affordable, the Ouray County Sheriffs hope they can solve this decades-old case.

The Sheriff’s office and coroner’s office have both contributed $500 towards this testing, but they have set up a crowdfunding campaign in hopes the community can help them get the rest of the funding they need to get testing. Ouray officials hope testing will bring a name to the man and possibly help bring him home to his family.
