Raising awareness of Fiji cyclone disaster

A Harborough man who spent six months volunteering on a remote Fijian island is raising money to send supplies there after two villages were destroyed by a cyclone.

Aaron Eason travelled to the island of Koro last year and was one of 17 volunteers working in the villages of Vatulele and Nacamaki, teaching children and delivering sports coaching programmes to every school on the island.

He left there last August but was shocked to discover that the huge Cyclone Winston had devastated both villages in early February.

Aaron said: “I have had no contact with my families in the island. They have no fresh water and the electricity and telephone lines will have been cut to prevent further injury, and so clean water will be a priority.”

Aaron was volunteering for the charity Think Pacific, and the organisation has set up an online appeal to raise money to buy and deliver supplies to the areas affected.

Aaron added: “I was hoping the people of Market Harborough could help me support the villagers by donating to the appeal. The disaster has gone largely unnoticed by mainstream news outlets.

“I have photos of Nacamaki village before and after the cyclone, so people can see the extent of the damage.”
