Sri Lanka win Asian Rugby Division 1 Championship

Sri Lanka won the Asian Rugby Division 1 Championship by defeating Kazakhstan 45-7 in the final at the Racecourse Stadium in Colombo.

The win allows Sri Lanka to ascend to the next level of the Asian Rugby competition as the island nation secures its first test rugby final victory since suspension from the sport a few years ago.

The final of the Asia Rugby Division 1 Championship 2024 worked off at the Racecourse Stadium in Colombo at 7.00 p.m. on Saturday (May 04).

Originally, this year’s Asia Rugby Men’s Division 1 was to be contested by Sri Lanka, Qatar and Pakistan. Unfortunately, Pakistan had to withdraw from this year’s competition.

Similarly, the Asia Rugby Men’s Division 2 competition also ended up with only 2 teams; Kazakhstan and India available to compete when Iran had to withdraw from this year’s competition.

To ensure that the unions that have expressed interest to compete in Rugby fifteens in 2024, Asia Rugby included Kazakhstan and India into the Asia Rugby Men’s Division 1. There will therefore be no Division 2 competition this year.
